Beyoncé & Kendrick: Courtside statements
Saturday night at Staples Centre. Golden State vs the Clippers. Beyoncé, Jay Z, and Kendrick Lamar all seated courtside, together. Two weeks prior, Beyoncé stomped the Super Bowl fists up with Formation, showcasing the power of #blackgirlmagic on a field that celebrates the privilege of the male. One week after that, Kendrick showed up in chains at the Grammys, using that stage to tell the story of black experience, characterised, always, by black perseverance. Now they’re hanging out in the front row at the basketball game – coincidence or conspiracy?
Maybe Bey just wanted to show off her new pink (really ugly) platforms. Maybe she just wanted to go out. Maybe they all had no idea in advance that they’d be there. Maybe they all just happened to request tickets for the same game. All this is very possible. It’s just that … well… Beyoncé has trained us to never take what she does for granted. To always stay focused. To always be ready for her plans. What is the plan here, exactly?
There had to have been a plan last week when she presented at the Grammys, right? They made us wait until almost the end of the night for the two biggest categories. Beyoncé ended up presenting Record of the Year to Bruno Mars and Mark Ronson and not Album of the Year. And I wonder if she made it clear to the Recording Academy that under no circumstances would she agree to present in a category that would result in a Taylor Swift win. Under no circumstances.
