Hi Duana, I am due very soon with our second boy.  We had very few ideas when naming our first, Daniel, and fewer this time, as in one.  The problem is husband will not (has not) produced any ideas. None. He also has offered little feedback on what I’ve proposed. For a while I thought he was afraid to put his ideas out there, but now it sincerely seems he’d be happy for me to do the brainstorming and/or simply for me to do the naming. Full Article

Duana Names: ‘Marking’ and Mega-Updates

Duana Posted by Duana at February 21, 2018 22:06:53 February 21, 2018 22:06:53

I’m hard at work marking* your homework, everyone!   Remember when teachers used to say that and you would agitate for ‘when are we getting it BACK?! When are we getting our essays back?’ I know this probably seems like it was the exclusive domain of keeners but I remember kids across the board wanting the teacher to cough up the marks, which… why? It just meant they were able to start the assignment-assignment-test-marking cycle again, and the teachers who were slow with marking did tend to have easier classes, didn’t they?  But I really am hard at work marking your work, or in this case, rounding out an awesome article to deploy delicious info from all the class lists you sent earlier this month. Full Article

Duana Names: Name Drops, Several Letters At A Time

Duana Posted by Duana at February 15, 2018 21:27:09 February 15, 2018 21:27:09

Dear Duana, Hoping for you to drop some name bombs on me. My husband and I are expecting a boy (first child) in March. We have a handful of names that we sort of agree on but are having trouble coming to an agreement, mainly because of our long-ass last name. Our last name is where you'll usually find the US president. Full Article

Hi Duana- I am writing for a friend because I so wish I had written to you before naming my twin boys 5 years ago! I ended up naming them Tate and Declan - I know you love Tate and I still rarely hear it - and I am super frustrated at how popular Declan is becoming! I have actually considered changing his name but I think it is too late. Full Article

Is love too much to ask??   I’m due in a week with #3 and struggling to even create a shortlist of potential boy names. We currently have two girls, Keaton and Blake. Our last name is 3 syllables (starts with a “B”, Italian) and I find myself drawn to one-syllable first names in the desire for flow, but this is not a mandate. Full Article

Dear Duana, My partner is convinced that my favorite baby names are too old fashioned. I am pretty set on the name Patricia for a girl (a family name), but I also like Antonia and Estelle. He is mostly onboard with Patricia... because he thinks she could go by the nickname Tricia and "fit in. Full Article

Help! I’m within a couple weeks of my due date with baby 3 and I’m starting to sweat not having a name! My boy is Axel and that was an easy pick for us. We wavered between Levi and Axel and the one no one was using was our winner. My girl is Afton, we named her years before she was ever a thought or plan. Full Article

Hi Duana, I’m a huge fan of your naming column and I am so pleased I finally get to write to you! I’m writing on behalf of a friend/co-worker who is expecting her second child, a girl, at the beginning of February. She and her husband still cannot agree on a name and it is getting down to the wire. Full Article

Dear Duana,  A psychic told my mother I would have two daughters. So obviously my first born is to be a boy babe.  My partner and I are both big on what I will call ‘dual naming’: a first name with gravitas and cool nickname to accompany it.  We live in London, England (I’m going to go further and specify we live in Hackney, which is hipster central with kids called Blue and Axel and Maple proliferating), I'm Canadian (with English family here and Scandi-Irish roots), he is English (solidly), and we are both criminal barristers (poor child). Full Article

Hi Duana, My friend is having her fifth child and it's her first boy. They are all completely shocked -- they thought for sure it would be girl #5. They have no idea what they are looking for in a boy's name. To give you some idea of their style, here's the girl's names: Isabella Frances Carolina Genevieve Sophia Vivienne Luciana Juliette Mom's last name is Italian. Full Article

Dear Duana, My husband and I are expecting our first child, a baby boy in mid-January. Picking his name feels like a very big deal, and I would love to hear your feedback and perhaps some alternatives. In choosing the name, we are aiming to hit the sweet spot between known-but-not-too-familiar. Full Article
