Best Vanity Fair Party Girl: Reese Witherspoon

Reese Witherspoon did not really have a film in the Oscar or awards season conversation this year. Sure, she was hustling for Sing! (which was a lot of fun), but she was not an Academy presenter on Sunday night, nor did she have a film to represent. None of these factors stopped her from hitting up the Vanity Fair Oscar party after the show. Given her increasing influence as a producer, she has more right to be there than Kate Hudson. Inside, she posed with Jennifer Aniston:

…And Elizabeth Banks and Amy Adams. Amy and Reese have Jean-Marc Vallée in common – he’s set to helm Amy’s HBO series, Sharp Objects and he collaborated with Reese on Big Little Lies and Wild.

Reese dressed for the occasion, too. She wore a sleeved, black and metallic silver Michael Kors dress from his most recent collection. She altered it slightly, made it a bit shorter and walked the red carpet with her husband Jim Toth. The dress is not memorable enough to become a talked-about fashion “moment,” but it’s not bland enough that it fades into the background either. It’s the perfect generic party dress, and judging from the photos of the event, Reese acted like the perfect party girl.

According to the LA Times’ Amy Kaufman, she left the party barefoot:

Reese has a lot to be in good spirits about. If you’ve listened to Lainey and Duana’s podcast Show Your Work, you know how exceptional she is in Big Little Lies. Like Lainey, I’ve also seen the first six episodes and you can’t take your eyes off of her type-A Monterey Tracy Flick, Madeline. Plus, she just wrapped the latest block of shooting on A Wrinkle in Time, and spent a few weeks in New Zealand drinking margaritas with Oprah Winfrey, Mindy Kaling and her director Ava Duvernay. Oh, and she has another film in post-production, Home Again, and it’s the writing and directorial debut of Nancy Meyers’ daughter Hallie Myers-Shyer. So, yes, it’s not a bad time to be Reese.

She appears to know that, too, and that she’s got some great work (on paper) in the can. From the looks of it, nothing was keeping Reese from that Vanity Fair party, or from schmoozing with her peers and fellow power players. Her posing in the Vanity Fair portrait studio was all about power, too.

Speaking of power players… Reese was watching E! and the Oscar broadcast while she was getting ready for the soiree. She posted a few shout-outs on her Instastory, to Ava DuVernay and her Big Little Lies sister Nicole Kidman, respectively. But she also drew a heart emoji on a photo of Ryan and Emma presenting together at the Oscars. Back in January, Reese attended a private screening of Jackie, and a month before that, she pledged her support to Natalie and her “timeless performance” online. It all appeared like Reese was Natalie’s champion, and while she likely was, after the Golden Globe sweep, I wrote about how she may have switched horses, and jumped on board the Emma train as Natalie’s campaign began to lose momentum.

Natalie announced on Saturday that she was unable to attend the Oscars or the Independent Spirit Awards due to her pregnancy. And last night, Reese made it clear she was rooting for La La Land, at least in part. This is somebody who loves to win, and loves to be associated with a winner. (Lainey: The lines between her and Madeline are blurring, if there are any lines left.)
