Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr, daughter of the greatest of all time, won her first Australian Open a year ago. Twelve months later, she’s on the cover of VOGUE, in her ma’s arms, with one fist raised as if to declare I AM HERE. As if she had to. We know!  Serena Williams, mother of Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr, is the on the cover of VOGUE for the third time, although she’s appeared in the magazine more times than that, and most recently in the September 125 anniversary issue Full Story

Dear Gossips,

Venus Williams advanced to the round of 32 yesterday at Wimbledon in 3 sets, not an easy match, and probably a harder match than she would have wanted during the first week. But, given the circumstances, with all that’s going on outside of tennis in her life, probably understandable that Venus took a while to get going yesterday. Full Story

Dear Gossips,

If you’re a regular visitor here at LaineyGossip, you are probably familiar with my obsession with Serena Williams. Serena Williams is now tied with Steffi Graf with 22 grand slam titles, the most in the open era, just over 2 months from turning 35 years old on September 26 (which also happens to be my birthday, not that it matters to anyone but me).  Read Full Intro

Dear Gossips,

The smile on Venus Williams’s face when she hugged Serena at the net after losing to her in the quarterfinals at the US Open last night – it was as real as it gets. And so genuinely sweet. We didn’t know if we’d get another opportunity to watch them play against each other again after Wimbledon.  Read Full Intro

Dear Gossips,

Venus Williams is 35. Serena Williams is 33. They met on Centre Court at Wimbledon yesterday and while it wasn’t a classic match, the significance here is that it might not happen again. The Williams sisters have dominated this sport for almost 20 years. Between them, they hold 27 grand slams – and that number only includes singles titles! It also doesn’t count Olympic gold medals. Also, if you count how many doubles and mixed doubles championships they share, it’s over 50. You cannot overstate their impact and influence. Sometimes though, I feel like people don’t care enough – about how they became who they are in a sport that wasn’t exactly welcoming, and what they fought through: themselves and everyone else. I’ve linked to it before but I’ll never get tired of this article so I’m going to link to it again – in my opinion the best piece ever written on Venus and Serena Williams, by John Jeremiah Sullivan for the New York Times. Click here.

For all that they’ve done, and how much they’ve won, do you think they get enough respect?

Yours in gossip,
