Dear Gossips,

It’s Emmy season. Nominations will be announced next month. Which is why we’ll be seeing a lot of the contenders over the next few weeks. A few of those contenders participated in The Hollywood Reporter Drama Actress Roundtable - Oprah Winfrey, Jessica Lange, Nicole Kidman, Chrissy Metz, Elisabeth Moss, and Reese Witherspoon. It’s a good read, solid homework for pop culture studies, and you should definitely get into it if you have 10 minutes today. But right now, I want to be shallow. Because of Reese Witherspoon. And her blind riddles.

Last year Reese talked about a script she was sent a few years ago, how terrible it was for the two female characters in the story, and how she was told that several Oscar winning actresses wanted those sh-tty parts – the larger point being that she was disappointed in the quality of work available at that time to women. But also…she was shading the project. During the THR Roundtable, Reese once again brings that up as an example. And Vulture’s done a pretty good analysis to identify the movie... but that wasn’t the only blind Reese offered up during the discussion when they were talking about how they balance their family schedules with their work schedules. Here’s Reese:

“I was talking to this very famous actor and I said, "How did you prepare for this role?" He said, "Well, I went into the woods for three weeks and I didn't talk to anybody." And this person has a lot of kids and is married. And he's like, "You did the same thing for Wild, right?" I was like, "Uh, no." If I went away for three weeks and no one could call me, everybody would've had a mental breakdown. I got on a plane and was shooting within 24 hours. I wish I had prep time. I love the preparation. I love watching and reading and digging deep.”

Right before that, she had already dropped this observation:

“They go away and come back and they're a hero. We go away and come back and we have abandoned our children.” (Laughs.)

She wasn’t talking about Charlie Hunnam, but it reminded me of Charlie Hunnum. About how, when filming The Lost City Of Z, he told reporters that he cut off contact with his girlfriend, Morgana, because he needed to be as miserable and as lonely as his character. As Reese said, male actors do this often – and are celebrated for it (Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hardy, Jared Leto, etc, etc, etc). When I wrote about it at the time, I wondered if the reaction would be the same if it was a woman. And, well, now you know Reese’s answer to that. And embedded in her answer, that she wishes she could have more prep time, more time to dig deeper, go into the woods, with Nicole Kidman nodding alongside her, is that these are two Oscar winning actresses who are about to be nominated for Emmys for acting AND producing. They did it WITHOUT having to go into the f-cking woods. Click here to read the full Drama Actress Roundtable at THR.

Yours in gossip,

Lainey
